The day started with a horse ride on the beautiful Icelandic horses. We went for a lovely stroll into the lava surrounding Mt.Helgafell volcano and across the hillsides.
The tour was split into three groups: experienced riders, beginners who wanted to go slow, and beginners who wanted to go fast.
It’s been a very long time since I’ve been on a horse (around 20 years), so we went in the beginners who wanted to go faster group.
The horses were beautiful and followed safe paths through amazing scenery. Lovely morning.
We then had a nice lunch at the riding center before heading off to the Leiðarendi lava cave.
We got our helmets on then headed under ground to the cave which the volcano created over 2000 years ago. We climbed, crawled and walked through the cave and stopped to view the wonders of nature. At one point we turned our head torches off and sat in the darkness just listening to the noises of the water dripping. Nice and relaxing.
This whole day trip is called “The Black Lava Tour” and can be booked here. Make sure to wrap up warm if you’re visiting in winter.
Great full day out. This day crossed off horse riding and caving off my bucket list. Are they on yours?
Happy bucket listing.
