Ice Climbing with Red Letter Days

As part of Red Letter Days bucket list campaign, I headed over to the west coast of Scotland to cross another thing off my bucket list – Ice Climbing.

After a comfortable sleep the night before at the Onich Hotel, we headed over to Ice Factor in Kinlochleven.

The Ice Factor is the National Ice Climbing Centre and at 800 square metres is the world’s largest indoor ice-climbing wall, with an ice cave, ice pillar, neve wall and fall-out gully.

Do you have what it takes to climb this 50 feet colossus? More than five times bigger than any other indoor ice climbing wall in the world, this is the perfect place to go ice climbing, even if you’ve never grasped an ice axe before. After a full safety briefing and being issued with the essentials, you’ll tackle the icy wall with full supervision from your expert instructor, using a top-roped belay safety system. There are routes to suit every level of experience, ranging from simple, easy angled slopes for the beginner, through to hanging bollards and gully features for more experienced climbers. This is a thrilling experience which may be the first of many more to come.

I was greeted into the facility by Serena, who got me into our climbing gear which included, harness, helmet and ice boots. I started off learning the basics of using the gear correctly on one of the smaller ice walls, this is where my body discovered it had muscles that hadn’t been used in a very long time! The experience lasted for one hour and thirty minutes, and by the end of it I was moving onto the 50 foot wall to release my inner Game of Thrones.

Serena was an excellent instructor, and made the whole day a great experience. The centre is amazing, and is perfect for beginners and experienced climbers. There is also a cafe to buy some lunch whilst you enjoy your day there.

The full day adventure package made for a great day out and I’d love to go back to attempt ice climbing again. Head over to to view the full range of bucket list activities.

My top picks are:

Secret Agent training for a day

Zombie Battle Bunker

and Tank Paintball battle

Which one would you pick?
